As of 31 December 2011, the total installed capacity of the Norwegian power system (hydro, wind and thermal power stations) was 31 746 MW, of which 95.0 percent was hydropower.

The official wind power target for Norway is an annual generation of 3 TWh by 2010, although the potential for wind power in Norway is much bigger: an annual production of 20 TWh by 2020 is a viable goal assuming development both on land and offshore.

  • Impact of large scale wind integration on power system balancing: With an increasing wind power penetration, more generation intermittency will be added to the power system, requiring higher flexibility and thus more regulating reserves. Based on high resolution numerical weather prediction models and wind speed measurements, the actual and the forecasted wind power production is simulated for five scenarios covering the years 2010, 2015 and 2020.
